How to make butter taste better

Most people will agree that adding a knob of butter to almost anything, improves the flavour. Whether this is a bowl of rice or mashed potato, butter enhances the flavour as well as the texture.

It is also well known that food in restaurants tastes better with butter, and fortunately there are some things that we can do so that all our food gets that delicious, creamy taste.

One of the things to consider when buying butter is the butterfat content. Regular butter that we buy in the supermarket is normally around 80% butterfat, while restaurants often use butter containing up to 86% butterfat.

The higher the fat content, the richer the butter. Next time you shop for butter take some time to check out the fat content. You will also find it slightly higher in butter which is from Europe.

Season the butter

A pinch of salt will only add to the flavour of the butter because it brings out the natural sweetness and creaminess.

Keep it fresh

It is better to buy in small amounts more often as the butter will always be fresher. Using small amounts means there is less chance of the butter absorbing the smell and taste of other strong smelling foods in the fridge.

Store it correctly

Keeping the butter in a sealed container and away from strong smelling foods will help to retain the fresh taste for longer.

Check out better quality butter

While you may pay a bit more, it is worth checking out butter with high butterfat content or stated as grass fed. In many places in Europe the cows are fed a natural diet which results in a richer product.

How to spread butter

You can leave the butter at room temperature for a day if you plan to use it. Salted butter works better this way because the salt helps to prevent bacterial growth.

What to add to butter to improve it

Maple syrup, fresh herbs and even cheeses will enhance the butter. You can evenly incorporate them by using a mixer and whipping the butter.

Whipping the butter will add more air to butter and make it light and fluffy. Store the whipped butter in a sealed container in the fridge.

Final thoughts

Restaurant tasting butter is due to several things, namley higher butterfat content, correct storage, careful seasoning and freshness. It is very easy to replicate that delicious taste by buying smaller amounts of good quality, flavouring it, and storing correctly until you are ready to use it.
